Is IVF Painful
We use gentle, individualized ovarian stimulation, which reduces the likelihood of IVF being painful
At Bay IVF, we prioritize gentle, individualized ovarian stimulation and strive for the highest egg quality rather than quantity. This approach minimizes the number of clinic visits and reduces the likelihood of IVF being painful.
During the IVF cycle, there may be some mild transient discomfort related to how stimulatory medications are administered.
Several hormonal medications used for ovarian stimulation are given as shallow subcutaneous injections. These shots are commonly administered by the patients’ partners or by the patients themselves. They cause minimal discomfort, and applying ice to the injection site before administration can make them virtually painless.
Some patients may also wonder about the pain associated with the egg retrieval procedure. Typically, egg retrieval takes only 5 to 10 minutes, and we use very comfortable conscious sedation for analgesia. As a result, most of our patients sleep through the brief procedure without the need for general anesthesia.
Another potential source of discomfort is ovarian hyperstimulation, a condition that can cause fluid accumulation within the body, particularly in the pelvic and abdominal cavities. This may lead to discomfort, bloating, and distension of the abdomen.
However, it’s essential to note that ovarian hyperstimulation occurs in only a small minority of patients. It typically peaks about a week after egg retrieval and then gradually disappears. Furthermore, it is a self-limiting condition, and medications can be used to minimize or even eliminate ovarian hyperstimulation.
As far as our understanding goes, IVF treatment has no lasting side effects, nor does it increase the risk of diseases such as cancer later in a woman’s life.
In summary, IVF treatment is gentle on the patient’s body physically but can present challenges psychologically and emotionally.
